MathHW.net Advanced Quantitative Reasoning

The Common Core Standards for Mathematics define the conceptual cateogies which are used to drive the content for the Advanced Quantitative Reasoning course. The Common Core Standards do not dictate specific course requirements nor a specific sequence of courses, but they do provide models which can be adopted by states; most states develop model courses from the common core course models. The units that are listed in this Advanced Quantitative Reasoning course are derived from the state model from Massachusetts and the sequence summarized from an earlier version of this course named Advanced Mathematical Decision Making. Advanced Mathematical Decision Making was proposed as a fourth-year course to follow Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II (or the equivalent). Its primary purpose is to prepare students for college majors that may not require calculus, for technical training, or for a range of career options. This course may also be useful to other students as an elective. Basic course instructional materials and supporting professional development are being piloted during 2009�2010, with full implementation available in 2010�2011. Extend the domain of trigonometric functions using the unit circle.
Model periodic phenomena with trigonometric functions.
Prove and apply trigonometric identities.

Geometry

Similarity, Right Triangles, and Trigonometry

Apply trigonometry to general triangles.

Circles

Understand and apply theorems about circles.

Expressing Geometric Properties with Equations

Translate between the geometric description and the equation for a conic section.

Geometric Measurement and Dimension

Explain volume formulas and use them to solve problems.
Visualize relationships between two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects.

Modeling with Geometry

Apply geometric concepts in modeling situations.

Statistics and Probability

Interpreting Categorical and Quantitative Data

Interpret linear models.

Making Inferences and Justifying Conclusions

Make inferences and justify conclusions from sample surveys, experiments, and observational studies.

Conditional Probability and the Rules of Probability

Use the rules of probability to compute probabilities of compound events in a uniform probability model.

Using Probability to Make Decisions

Calculate expected values and use them to solve problems.
Use probability to evaluate outcomes of decisions.

Standards For Mathematical Practice

Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
Model with mathematics.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
